~Simply Speaking~
“Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”
Matthew 5:37 (NIV)
I think God wants us to speak simply. The verses before this spoke about not swearing any oaths. When you have promised on something, keep your promise. There should be nothing more to it. You should not swear by all that’s holy in order to make people believe what you say. People will believe what you say, if you make a promise and then you deliver on that promise. If you try to escape a promise you made using the intricacies of language or “technicalities,” you have stopped following God’s teachings. Jesus is trying to tell us to be truthful and trustworthy. Those who are trustworthy and truthful will not need to end their promises with “on my mother’s grave…” or “cross your heart, hope to die” etc…
for a more modern interpretation, perhaps Jesus is speaking about the evils of small print… hahah sign this contract… the small print will sign over your firstborn to me… *chuckles* j/k but I think we get the picture… any comments? ^_^
